Why only 1% of South Korea's offshore wind power projects are operational
Renewable energy, like wind power, is key to fighting the climate crisis.
South Korea aims to produce 12GW of offshore wind energy by 2030, but only 1% of its offshore wind projects initiated in the last decade are operational. It can take more than ten years for a project to be approved by the government.
South Korea is great at a lot of things, like high-speed internet, but what's holding up this crucial aspect of creating a healthy, liveable planet for all?
In this video, we explore the reasons why, finding that too much bureaucratic red tape and an overly complex, inefficient process are the main culprits.

President Moon Jae-in, laid down the government's three-way plan to expand the nation's 124 megawatt offshore wind power to hundred times that, to 12 gigawatts in the next decade.
After visiting a wind power complex in Jeollabuk-do Province Friday, President Moon vowed to first, develop a large-scale wind power complex by looking for areas which would least affect the fishing industry.
Second, Moon promised continued government investment in technological developments and to expand infrastructure so that local companies can be competitive in the market.
And lastly, the President vowed to revive the local economy through advancements in the offshore wind power industry, and help citizens whose earnings may have been affected by the slowing fishery market.
Addressing concerns of the project's effect on the fishing marine environment,
Moon said that the offshore wind project will be developed with direct participation of regional residents, and made assurances that profits will be returned to local residents.
"By promoting massive private investment, we seek to create around 80,000 new jobs annually, and ways to prosper together with local residents."
The latest visit marks the President's first Green New Deal-related on-site visit, since revealing the government's ambitious Korean New Deal initiative earlier this week.
The Blue House says the visit comes as part of the Moon administration's full-fledged efforts to pursue the Green New Deal drive by creating a new growth engine that could help prepare the nation amid the global climate crisis.
